lately i've noticed that I get hit up more to buy
traffic on a CPM or flat monthly rates.. vs them just doing normal
PPS...

most of the CPM deals that we've tried have never panned out.. we normally end up basically paying $100+ per join..

with that said.. I know some of them have to work.. b/c so many companies who use this model are still in biz..

pretty much any large webmaster could almost demand this.. but is it always in the best interest??

Yep times have changed, CPM and CPC is the preferred route and flat rate is still around as well.

I sure as hell try to avoid CPA as much as possible now. Back in the day when I bore the risk, it was worth it because the ROI was great. Now, forget it. Low risk is key.

I do CPM for non-adult stuff, but CPA for adult, whether I am buying or selling.

i could see CPM for the big guys, no way for the little guys, too much random traffic etc going on to make sense of the numbers.

nothing wrong with CPA for people that don't have a real handle on their traffic.

flip side to this, alot of the people that want CPM figure their traffic is worth much more than it is.

One of the largest programs still buys a lot of CPM / Spot spots but they got very good backend software to track it (hey i worked on it so it must be good :-) ).

I have had same problems with CPM ends up costing to much pps to buy. Only thing that works is search engine traffic but buying enough at the right price is tough.

Virtually all the paid ad spots we've tried to buy are ridiculously overpriced -- similar #'s to what Greg said. We have the most success with smallish sites (Alexa 10,000 to 20,000).. large sites have a really bloated view of what their traffic is worth. The way you can tell if an ad is a rip off is if it's coming available soon.. all the good ones are going to be taken.

The only justification I could think of for buying overpriced high profile sites is to use them as a loss leader for brand exposure to entice new affiliates.

yeah i see it heading that way as well....especially for larger sponsors without a specialty niche....big titted asians...or redheads in stockings...these type of sites and the more extreme niched out ones especially, will always do well, so they will probably still be able to stick with revshare or cpa.

i like the idea of cpm from a webmaster point of view, less work involved as well.

it is sort of like the television industry...the sponsor company/program is responsible for making the ad that works...not the tv company/webmaster

People REALLY underestimate smaller sites.
Everyone is so interested in getting space on huge sites they don't see that its usually the smaller sites that have non-skim and higher quality traffic. You can CPM promote the crap out of somethinig like Rude.com but not "bigtitwonderbabes.com"

---
If you are a big company that needs branding or needs to improve branding, CPM is beneficial. But not for small companies or affiliates trying to sell memberships.

Everything is supply and demand. People profit, others don't. You so rarely hear from the people who are making profits, because they like to keep things to themselves.

Productivity sites can do very nicely for branding and aggregating smaller webmasters into larger traffic. Sites like Thunder-ball.net, WebmasterScore.com, IndustryIncentives.com, WhoPaidMe.com and stats programs like NiftyStats or UnifiedStats are excellent cost-effective ways to market to webmaster affiliates without going the CPM route.
